Crippled By Fear

I've noticed time and time again that Fear is a Factor for me. I can’t help but hear Joe Rogan's voice in my head when I say that. It’s interesting since growing up I always wanted to be on Fear Factor, I wanted to face the danger and the unknown. As I got older something changed. I began to feel nervous about change, making decisions, big moves, and new obstacles. Fear began to hinder my life as I thought what would people think, what if I fail, what if…

I can look back and give you examples of when fear won the battle. Also, there are examples of when I conquered my fears. It was always shocking to me when I would face my fear and then turn around later to be scared of it so quickly. These past few months I have faced decisions, uncertainty, and through it all, I have felt fear often. One thing I am slowly learning is that fear is inevitable. Fear will make its way into our lives during any season. It's what we do with the fear that's important!

I am slowly starting to shift my perspective of fear. I have taken time to look at situations in life, such as leaving my home to do an 11 month mission trip around the world, quitting my job, starting to better my photography, starting to write, etc & I noticed a pattern. Fear was in each of those moments and it was trying to keep me from doing something I wanted to.

I am beginning to see fear as this beautiful indicator that the thing fear is keeping me from is what I love, what I want, what I need to do, or what I am passionate about. I am slowly starting to use fear as a tool to help point me in a direction of my desires, my hopes, and my dreams. I am learning that fear will always be there and it is my choice to silence it.

I want to reiterate a word I used...LEARNING. I am still learning & haven’t mastered it. Truthfully, I don’t think I will ever master it, but that's alright.

In the book " The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks & Win Your Inner Creative Battles." there is a passage that reads;

"A professional acts in the face of fear. The amateur believes he must first overcome his fear; then he can do his work. The professional knows that fear can never be overcome. He knows there is no such thing as a fearless warrior or dread-free artist."

This passage hit home for me. We often get so caught up in our fear & our "what if's" that we sit back, wait, & dream. I am confident that the people we look up to still have fears. The difference is they didn't let their fears hold them back!

Highly Recommend this book for Creatives

Here are some steps I have been taking/practicing when it comes to fear:

1. Identify the FEAR: What is it that I am afraid of?
2. Admit that I am fearful; I believe denial keeps us hindered, even more, when we don’t speak out our fears
3. Speak out what my fear is keeping me from
4. Face my fear by taking steps & not remaining crippled by it

Hope this is an encouragement for you to face your fears & to know that you are capable of doing great things!

I know it's October the month to be scared! Well, let's make one thing clear, I enjoy the occasional scary movie & haunted house, but this month I am choosing to practice not letting it control my life decisions!

Have a great Wednesday!

Stay true to you,
